Choc Chia Power balls

These ChocChia Power balls were invented for the Beetroot Bootcamp ladies when I catered their October Day event.

They wanted the recipe, and these would also make great bike or run fuel for my cyclist and triathlete WholeHealth-ers…so here is the recipe!


I ripe banana, mashed

3 tbsps honey

3 tbsps nutbutter– or use peanut butter, but choose one without added sugar

1 cup of rolled oats

1/2 a cup of chia seeds

1/2 a cup of DARK choc chips or chopped dark chocolate (the darker the better)

Chopped toasted nuts (I used hazelnuts) to coat the balls in


Warm the honey, nut butter in a small pan.

Mash in the banana

Stir in the oats and chia seeds, and when it has cooled a little, mix in the chopped choc or choc chips. I also add a pinch of ground sea salt to mine.

Shape into about 10 walnut-sized balls

Sprinkle the nuts onto a plate or chopping board and roll the balls in the nuts to coat them.

Chill before eating or packing for your ride. Store the balls in the fridge (or freezer) to keep them until you next need a pre or post workout snack!

These little balls pack some power containing about 100 kcals of energy per ball, about 15g of carbohydrate and just 4g of fat. The slow-release energy of the ingredients means it’s not just a sugar-spike that you’re getting from your snack.

Extra goodies also include magnesium and bone-building calcium from the chia and nuts, Skin-supporting Vitamin E from the nuts (especially if you use almonds), and Vitamin C and B6 from the banana. And did we mention they taste delicious…?
